Cubs landmark hearing planned
March 7, 2003
CHICAGO -- The city's Commission
on Landmarks on Thursday denied a Cubs' request to delay a hearing
on the proposed landmark designation of certain sections of
Wrigley Field.
The Cubs had asked for a 60-day
delay to study revisions to the Daley administration's proposal.
The hearing will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in City Council
chambers.
The team and city have been negotiating
for nearly three years on the landmark designation. Among the
issues of contention: a proposed 2,000-seat bleacher expansion
and the number of night games.
A city resolution calls for Wrigley's
scoreboard, exterior elevations and front signage, as well as
other sections, to fall under city landmark protection. It also
gives the City Council authority to approve any bleacher extension
over public sidewalks on Waveland and Sheffield Avenues.
The Cubs are owned by Tribune
Co., which also owns the Chicago Tribune.
