Remodeling on tap for Wrigley Field, and Cubs' roster

The 2006 season begins this week at Wrigley Field, even as the Cubs will be finishing the 2005 season in Houston. Construction is scheduled to begin immediately on the expansion of the Wrigley bleachers, adding about 1,800 seats.

The expansion took years of planning and negotiations with the city, but one thing that hasn't been studied is the effect the new seating will have on wind patterns and fly balls.

"I've been wondering about that myself,'' manager Dusty Baker said Tuesday. "I guess it depends on how high it is. I'm sure it will have some effect.''

The expanded bleachers will be one sure thing for the Cubs next season. The remodeling project the team needs on the field is extensive, too. Baker said the Cubs need better defense, more timely hitting, more walks by Cubs batters and fewer by the opposition and fewer opposition home runs.

"And we have to stay healthy,'' Baker said. "I know people don't want to hear that, but it's true. We've been without Aramis [Ramirez] for a month now.''

Ramirez, who hasn't played since Aug. 25 because of a strained left quadriceps, isn't expected to play again. Jerry Hairston Jr. (sore knee) also is done for the year, but Todd Walker might be available for limited duty in the final days after straining his right knee Friday.
