Stability and Quality of Air Void Systems in Concretes with Superplasticizers.

This study discusses the effect of combining different polycarboxylate superplasticizers and different air entraining agents in modern concrete. A novel test method is invented to analyze the change of mixture with time and the stability of the resulting air gap system. The data collected include slump, unit weight, fresh air content, hardened air content, spacing coefficient, specific surface area, rapid freeze-thaw durability and improved fresh air content. All tests performed followed ASTM standards, but the modified air content test was the main purpose of this study. The results show that some polycarboxylates will coarsen the pore system and cause stability problems. Based on the original hardened air content data, the number of empty strings less than 200 microns is calculated. This value proves a good indication of the quality of the air system in the concrete. Indicators for evaluating air gap systems have not been reported in the past. Expand ▼
